Delta Air Lines will launch daily Los Angeles-Mexico City service from Dec. 1, complementing its transborder joint-venture partner Aeromexico's existing 6X-daily roundtrip service.
Atlanta-based Delta plans to operate a 132-seat Airbus A319 on the route in a three-tier configuration of 12 first-class seats, 18 Delta comfort seats and 102 main cabin seats. The flight is subject to government approval.
The route will mark Delta's return to the Los Angeles-Mexico City market after a 12-year gap in direct service, the airline said.
"[The] combined schedule gives customers access to ... 20 destinations beyond Los Angeles, and our recent relocation to Terminals 2 and 3 makes it more convenient ... for customers to connect to those destinations from LAX," Delta VP-sales, West region, Ranjan Goswami said.
Delta and Aeromexico have moved quickly to establish new direct routes between the US and Mexico following the formal launch of their antitrust immunized transborder joint venture in early May.
Subject to government approval, the airlines plan to launch five new routes and expand service on four existing routes in fall 2017. The new markets, all to be flown utilizing Aeromexico aircraft, will operate between Atlanta and Merida, Mexico; Atlanta and Queretaro, Mexico; Los Angeles and Leon, Mexico; Seattle and Mexico City; and Portland, Oregon and Mexico City. Expanded service on existing Aeromexico-operated routes will include a second daily flight between Atlanta and Guadalajara, Mexico; and a second daily flight between Atlanta and Leon, Mexico. Delta will expand service on its existing routes between Los Angeles and Los Cabos, Mexico (a second daily flight) and New York-JFK and Cancun (a third daily flight).
