One person is
dead after a shooting at the University of Utah, and police are searching for
the gunman.
The Associated
Press reports an injured woman came to the Salt Lake City school campus Monday
evening to report that her husband had assaulted her while camping in Red Butte
Canyon, which abuts the east campus.
University of
Utah Police Chief Dale Brophy said the husband, identified as 24-year-old
Austin Boutain, is believed to have fatally shot a person during a carjacking
at the mouth of the canyon around 9 p.m. Monday.
The campus was
locked down for several hours as the search focused on Mario Capecchi Drive, a
section of the campus that includes the main residence halls, medical complex
and research buildings. Students received text alerts to shelter in place due
to reports of gunshots.
The victim has
not been identified, and authorities would not say if it was a student.
The Salt Lake
City Tribune reports the lockdown was lifted at 3 a.m. Tuesday morning as
the manhunt moved to the nearby Wasatch Mountains. Hundreds of law
enforcement authorities, including the FBI, are searching on foot and by
helicopter as they suspect Boutain is in the foothills above Red Butte Canyon.
Traffic is
blocked off near the area, the newspaper reports, as Boutain is described as
armed and dangerous. Salt Lake City police say he's a white male with
tattoos of a cross and a teardrop on his face, as well as neck and arm tattoos,
and was wearing a black coat, black jeans and a black beanie hat.
Anyone with
information about Boutain, including his potential whereabouts,
is encouraged to call 801-799-3000.
The University of
Utah announced on Twitter that all classes have been canceled for Tuesday, Oct.
31.
