The bodies of two Austrian
paragliders missing at sea since Monday near Lisbon were found on Thursday, the
National Maritime Authority (AMN) has announced.
"The search had to be
suspended this morning due to bad weather and just as the teams were
demobilizing the sea returned the victims to almost the exact spot on the beach
where the Maritime Police forensic divers were gathered, " AMN commander
Fernando Pereira da Fonseca told the Lusa Portuguese News Agency.
The Austrians went missing
after a woman who was out paragliding landed on the beach only to be pulled
into the sea by a strong tide with her paraglider still attached.
Two male members of her
paragliding group entered the water to help her, but all three were swept out
to sea.
One of them, a 45-year-old
man, was found dead on Monday. But severe weather and powerful waves hindered
recovery of the other two, a man and a woman, both in their 30s, although the
paraglider itself was sighted 50 m from the coast.
The accident took place at
Meco, a beach near the town of Sesimbra, 40 km south of Lisbon. Enditem
