A base jumper who leapt off a 480 foot cliff and
smashed into a rockface at 40mph when his parachute failed to properly open has
talked about the moment he heard his body 'crack' following his near-death
experience.
Lee Cooper, 48, suffered two broken hips, a broken
pelvis, broken ribs and a punctured lung after jumping off Beachy Head cliff -
but has insisted his accident will not deter him from performing the stunt
again.
Shocking head cam footage recorded by Mr Cooper shows
the moment he crashed into the rock-face after his parachute failed to properly
open, where he can be heard screaming in agony.
Mr Cooper, who is now recovering at home in Chicester,
West Sussex, was quickly followed down the cliff face by his paramedic friend
who performed a base jump to help him.
Following the incident, he told the Sun: 'I've done
the same jump about 60 or 70 times before and have never had a problem but on
that day, when I tried opening my parachute after going into freefall, it
failed.'
He added: 'This isn't going to put me off though –
it's not different to a person falling off a horse, you just get back on.
'My wife might have something different to say
though.'
The injuries he sustained in the freak accident have
ruled him out of a base jumping holiday he had booked in Switerland, but he has
now to be 'back out as soon as' he can.
The coastguard and search and rescue helicopter were
dispatched to rescue the man after his fall from the cliff near Eastbourne,
East Sussex.
After being treated by a second paramedic on the
helicopter, he was rushed to a meeting point in Brighton, East Sussex, before
being taken to hospital on Saturday.
A Coastguard spokesman said: 'Birling Gap Coastguard
team were tasked to a base jumper whose parachute had pulled him towards the
cliff.
'It was reported by his friends that one of the other
base jumpers was a paramedic, who immediately jumped off the cliff to his aid.
