The operating
principle of general UAV jammer is to send interference signals, cut off the
communication between the UAV and the controller, and disrupt the GPS
navigation system, then force the UAV to automatically land.
However, at the
Black Hat Security Conference in Las Vegas, researchers at the Alibaba Security
Department demonstrated how to use sound to attack the UAV.
It is said this
kind of sound weapon mainly attacks smart devices which depend on MEMS Sensor, such
as gyroscopes and accelerometers, to input signals.
At the scene,
Alibaba researchers shown the use of sound to attack iPhone 7, Samsung Galaxy
S7, DJ UAV, VR display and Millet electric balance board.
Most commercial
gyroscopes are tuning fork gyroscopes, and if the external vibration matches
the resonant frequency of the gyroscope, the sensor will cause the sensor to
send the wrong data to the device. By tuning the sound signal to the resonant
frequency of the MEMS system, the researchers demonstrated that they could
cause the sensor to send fatal data, resulting in failure of the device or
software that relied on the sensor. Therefore, it can make the UAV fall, the
robot failure, lose the sense of direction of VR and AR, and even interfere
with the car's airbag sensor.
