A plane burst into a fireball when it
crashed into power lines and traffic lights before smashing into a road just
inches from cars.
The small aircraft was filmed by a
dashboard camera quickly diving towards the ground above Mukilteo Speedway in
Mukilteo, Washington, USA, yesterday afternoon.
Footage shows several cars sitting in
traffic waiting patiently for the lights to turn green when suddenly the
aircraft appears and plummets quickly towards the ground.
The plane hits several electricity wires
and the traffic lights as it descends, causing it to burst into a huge fireball
and crash into Harbor Point Boulevard Southwest, causing a huge plume of smoke
to arise into the sky.
Several cars are then seen turning away
from the road and taking a different route to avoid the scene of the
crash.
A number of cars were damaged and traffic
was blocked for several hours but there were no serious injuries, according
to Mukilteo Police Department.
Investigators told Q13 Fox the pilot, a
man from Oregon, took off from Paine Field nearby just before 3.30pm local time
before losing power. He added he attempted to land on Harbor Point Boulevard as
it was clear, but inadvertently clipped the power lines.
Amanda Hayes, a motorist who was driving
to work with her colleague, said she felt the fireball as the plane went over
her van.
She added: '[It felt] terrifying and hot,
but we're ok, and it's really all I can ask for that nobody involved was
injured.'
Nearby resident Ron Cohen, a pilot
himself, said: 'It looks like he [the pilot] did an incredible job.'
Snohomish County Public Utilities District
said there was a brief power cut in the area after the single-engine plane hit
the power lines.
